What is floating? The complete beginner's guide

Everything you need to know before your first float — how it works, what it feels like and how to prepare.

Person floating weightlessly in salt water in a float tank

Floating — also called flotation therapy, sensory deprivation or flotation-REST — means lying in a tank of skin-warm water mixed with around 500 kg of Epsom salt. The salt makes you float effortlessly on the surface, while light and sound can be switched off completely.

What does it feel like?

Most people describe the first minutes as unusual, then deeply calm. Without gravity, temperature differences or sound, the body relaxes and the mind slows down. Many lose track of where the body ends and the water begins.

How to prepare

  • Avoid caffeine for a few hours before
  • Don't shave or wax the same day — salt stings on fresh skin
  • Eat something light so you're not hungry
  • Remove contact lenses and bring nothing but yourself — we provide towels, shower products and earplugs

How often should you float?

One session gives a strong sense of relaxation. Studies that show long-term effects on stress and sleep usually involve regular floats over several weeks — which is why many of our guests choose a membership.
